Signs You're Struggling Post Show — And What to Do About It
I'm going to be honest with you. Post show nearly broke me.
Not the prep. Not the stage. After. The bit nobody really talks about. And it was that experience — combined with realising just how little real, practical support existed for competitors going through it — that led me to create the KOMPAK Post Show E-Book.
But before we get to that, let's talk about what you might be going through right now. Because if you're reading this, there's a good chance something doesn't feel right.
Your mind and body are more depleted than you realise
Prep takes everything from you. Physically and mentally. By the time you step on that stage, you've been running on reduced calories, sheer willpower, and a singular focus for weeks — sometimes months. Your body has been under enormous stress. Your mind has been locked onto one goal with an intensity that most people around you simply won't understand.
And then it ends.
And both your body and your brain just... crash.
The exhaustion hits differently post show. It's not the kind of tired you can sleep off in a night. It goes deeper than that. And when you're in it, it can feel completely overwhelming.
Signs that post show is hitting harder than expected
Everyone's experience is different. But these are some of the most common signs that you might be struggling:
You're exhausted but can't properly rest. The mental fatigue from months of prep doesn't just disappear when the show ends. It lingers. And it's a different kind of tired to anything you've felt before.
Food feels out of control. This is one of the most common — and least talked about — parts of post show. After weeks of restriction, the pull towards food can feel overwhelming. I remember thinking I could eat my way out of the exhaustion. That if I just had enough of the things I'd been avoiding, I'd feel better. I didn't. It made everything worse — physically and mentally. And then the guilt on top of that made it harder still. If this sounds familiar, please know you are not the only one.
Your mood has crashed. The high of show day fades fast. Without the goal, the structure, the identity of being "in prep" — a lot of competitors hit a real low. It can genuinely feel like grief. Because in a way, it is.
You don't recognise your body. Your body will change quickly after a show. Water comes back, food volume goes up, and the stage physique disappears fast. For a lot of competitors this is one of the hardest parts to navigate, especially when you've spent months working towards that look.
You feel lost without the structure. Prep gives you a routine — training, meals, check ins, posing. When it ends, the absence of that can leave a strange emptiness that's really hard to fill.
What actually helps
Be gentle with yourself. I know that's easier said than done when you're in it, but the post show period is not the time to punish yourself for how you're feeling or what you're eating.
Give yourself permission to rest — properly. Not just your body. Your mind too. The goal doesn't have to be replaced immediately. You're allowed to just exist for a while.
On food — try to move towards something that feels sustainable rather than swinging between restriction and eating everything in sight. Again, easier said than done. If you're really struggling, please talk to someone. A coach, a professional, someone who gets the competitor experience.
And know that it passes. It doesn't always feel like it will. But it does.
When I went through my worst post show experience, I went looking for real help. Not generic wellbeing advice. Not a list of tips. Something that actually explained what was happening in my body and my mind — and gave me practical strategies to work through it.
It didn't really exist. Not in the way I needed it to.
So I spent years — through personal experience, research, and working with competitors — building it myself. The KOMPAK Post Show E-Book is the resource I wished I'd had. It covers the physical, the mental, and the practical. Real strategies, not just reassurance. And it meets you wherever you are — whether you're deep in off season, heading into prep, or right in the middle of the post show period right now.
And please remember — our DMs and emails aren't just there to support you during prep and on show day. We've been through this ourselves. We get it. If you're struggling, reach out. You don't have to navigate this alone.
