Doing Your Own Tan: The Secrets They Don't Tell You About

Doing your own tan can be a daunting process, especially if you haven’t attempted to do it before! So, here are a few our top tips and secrets that we have found out over the years. Hopefully this will make the process a lot easier for you!

Vaseline/clear nail varnish over your nails - a quick and easy solution to stop your nails being stained by the tan!

Make sure you have NO products on your skin prior to applying your tan. Perfume and deodorant can leave you with green patches

Leave elbows, knees, feet and hands ‘til last! - It’s best to do these before you freshly dip the mitt into the solution again. These areas will always cling to tan better than elsewhere so the tan needs to be applied with care! We don’t want to see any super dark elbows :)

Apply prep spray/cream before applying base coat - This should be applied to hands, elbows, knees and feet. These are the areas where tan can catch really quickly, and prepping them will avoid these areas being super dark and patchy.

Turn the mitt inside out when doing your top coat - If you’ve done your base coat your mitt may have gone hard overnight. This will be just be a dried build up of tan on the side that you applied the tan with originally. For a smooth top coat application flip your mitt inside out to ensure that it’s still soft and creates an even finish.

Empty the contents of your base coat into tupperware for a wayyy easier application! This will avoid unnecessary spills, help with an even tan and stop any waste!

Run your mitt under the tap until the water goes clear to use again. You want to make sure that you’ve washed out as much of the tan as possible to avoid the mitt drying out and going hard from tan build up. This will keep it in good condition and ensure that you have a smooth application on the next use. Do NOT use the mitt again until it is dry… speaking from experience tan and water do not mix!

Ladies….a tan saver (Shee wee) is a LIFESAVER. For the first year ever I have had NO tanning mishaps!

Wear a glove when applying your tan to avoid your finger tips being excessively dark. Trust us, you won’t be able to remove it afterwards!!

When doing your underarms, keep your arms up - This will mean that they dry nice and quickly, avoiding any smudges or spoils to the tan.

Lean forwards when tanning your glutes - To make sure that you don’t have a crease line underneath them.

Flying solo?! - Put your tanning mitt onto a spatula to apply the tan to those hard-to-reach areas.

Take loose, dark clothing to wear after applying your tan. Make sure that you are FULLY dry before getting dressed.
